    Arrival Kolkata-Sightseeing

Kolkata, India's second biggest city, is a perpetually ongoing festival of human existence, concurrently luxurious and squalid, refined and frantic, pointedly futuristic.

Famously known as the City of Joy, Kolkata is, in every sense, the artistic, cultural and intellectual capital of the country. Kolkata's streets are vivid, hectic, chaotic, and yet, brimming with life and creativity. Driven by the indomitable spirit of the self-made middle class, the city has created a beautiful juxtaposition of the old colonial-era charm with the nascent upcoming hipster culture that thrives amongst the city's millennial residents. Starting from admiring the flourishing art scene in the city to going on rewarding gastronomical explorations to wandering amidst the countless bazaars to sitting by the banks of the Hooghly and enjoying a peaceful sunset, Kolkata is soaked in layers and layers of heritage and culture, and peeling off each layer to look beneath the hood is a very rewarding, once-in-a-lifetime experience. As the famous quote goes, "If you want a city with a soul, come to Calcutta".

Kolkata has a distinct tinge of its royal past lingering in every nook and cranny of the city. If you want to soak in some of the city's regal past, take a walk along the streets of North Kolkata, which houses some of the oldest mansions in the city, swathed with vines and a persistent sense of aristocratic pride. Kolkata is home to Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral house, which has now been converted into a museum and houses a staggering collection of family portraits and paintings. There are plenty of ghats all over the city where you can sit and enjoy a sunset while sipping on tea.Kolkata has a very lively nightlife, and the entire stretch along Park Street houses innumerable bars and pubs where you can party the night away. Kolkata's street food is famous all across the country, and the city is lined with eateries and food stalls at every corner, where you can savour local Bengali food, or try out local snacks such as Jhalmuri, or Ghugni Chaat.

The ghat has a tall colonial structure, which is the landing berth of the ghat. It is a fine Doric-Greek style pavilion with huge pillars. The ghat, originally known was Baboo Raj Chandra Ghat, is now only known by first words Baboo-ghat or Babu-ghat. Babu / Baboo in Bengali means Sahib or gentleman. The ghat is named after Babu Raj Chandra Das, husband of Rani Rashmoni and zamindar of Janbazar, who built it in 1830, in memory of her late husband.A marble tablet beneath the pediment implies that some of the credit for the erection of the ghat must go to Lord William Bentinck as he encouraged such spending with a view to improve public amenities. It is second oldest ghat of Kolkata

The river over a period of time has moved away from the temple. The temple is now on the banks of a small canal called Adi Ganga which connects to the Hoogly. The Adi Ganga was the original course of the river Hoogly. Hence the name Adi (original) Ganga.

    TRAVEL TIPS:

    • Weather: Port Blair mainly has three main seasons: summer, winter, and monsoon. Owing to its location in the Bay of Bengal, it experiences heavy winds during the monsoon and a tropical climate otherwise. Early November until mid-May sees the best weather in the islands. Port Blair being situated at a slightly elevated area, experiences a slightly lower temperature (by a degree or so) as compared to the other islands.
    • Currency: Like the rest of the island in Andaman, the Indian Rupee is the currency used. Port Blair has the most number of ATM’s and institutions (Banks and private companies). Exchanging currency and withdrawing money is thus most convenient in Port Blair.
    • There are only two ATMs on Havelock – SBI and Axis bank out of which SBI is reliable. There are days when both ATMs do not work. Being stranded on an island with no money is the last thing you would wish for. Therefore, carrying adequate cash is advisable.
    • Communication and Internet: Satellite broadband powers Internet connections in Port Blair. Since Optical fibre cables have not arrived here yet, Internet is a slow and expensive luxury in the islands. Many cafes, restaurants, and hotels do provide WiFi facility but this is often disrupted or extremely slow.As phone connectivity, BSNL and Vodafone are the two most reliable service providers. If you are looking to invest in a local number, buy a BSNL sim card (available in Port Blair and Havelock mostly)
    • Monday is a holiday in Andamans. Most places will be closed except North Bay, Ross Island tour and Havelock.
    • Foreign Nationals should enter the islands with required permit from the immigration authorities.
    • Do not enter in restricted or tribal areas around the Islands. Interacting with them, giving them food, gifts or even clicking their pictures is NOT allowed( Jarawa) One can be fined and imprisoned for the same.
    • While visiting the limestone caves, do not try to make contact with the tribal people.
    • The mud volcano isn't an ideal destination for the children below 10 years.
    • Always stick to your routes and not venture into the restricted areas.
    • Weather is something that no one has control over. Sometimes, nature provides ample warning. At other times, things can change in a jiffy. The best thing to do is to check the weather a couple of days before you leave for any warning signs. Indications that it may get cloudy and rain a little can impact your plans quite a bit. If you already travelling during the monsoon, keep a check for local restrictions and timings on entering the costal areas.
    • Wear protective and durable hiking boots, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent and something to protect you from the rain, a topographic map and plenty of water.
    • It is good and wise to stay away from the beaches during the night as the great number of wild animal that inhabits the place and may pose a threat to you.
    • Watch out for biting ants if you are sitting under the trees on beach. They are quite large and very poisonous at times. It is better to check the area first before you settle down. They are also on the tree branches and so it will be wise to check them before you hang your belongings.
    • Snakes are another threat to the smooth travel in Andaman and may sometime pose to be very dangerous. If bitten it is prescribed to take immediate medical attention. Crocodiles inhabits in creeks in South Andaman and certain Islands around Havelock, often changing habitat via sea. When travelling near crocodile habitats do observe safety signs and do not swim in rivers, estuaries or mangrove shores. Also do get some expert advice about crocodiles before camping, fishing or boating.
    • Wild dogs can be a problem, especially along the beach at night – people are regularly bitten. You'd be well-advised to carry a stick to scare them off or a handful of stones. Local authorities confirmed that they are helpless with this problem of stray dogs that live in forest but close enough to beaches visited by tourists.
    • Sandflies make a great problem while sunbathing. Occasionally they are in a larger number, so longer shirts and trousers will be recommended.
